Vicki Watson

What is your typical work day like?

My day varies depending on what season it is and what the weather is like.
In the Spring I clean out any leaves or debris left in the flower beds, plant flowers and/or shrubs, trim shrubs, and do some edging and mulching.
Summer time brings the heat and the weeds. I usually spend a few hours watering every day unless we get rain. I pull weeds and spray weeds. I despise weeds.
Then the leaves start to fall and the flowers start to die, so I begin fall clean up. I also backpack blow the walkways, entrance, and patios.  I pick up any trash left in the parking lots, flower beds and entrance.

How long have you worked here?

I started in July of 2007.

What were your previous jobs?

I tended bar in college. I had a small lawn care business, which my husband took over and I worked in a real estate office.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I love animals and I wanted to be a veterinarian.

What are your interests and hobbies?

I like going camping and hiking.  I have hiked the 3 highest mountains in Vermont (Stowe, Camels Hump and Killington), some parts of the Appalachian Trail, Long Trail and several other trails.

Closer to home I enjoy hiking at Pinnacle Point, Tucquan Glen, Trout Run, Lancaster County Park and several other trails. I usually go camping at least once a year. Some places that I have been camping include Ricketts Glen,
Raystown Lake, Pine Creek, Ohiopyle, Vermont and many other places. I always take my dogs with me when I can. I also started competing in disc dog
competitions with my dog Diesel and he has won four ribbons so far.  I recently joined the Parks and
Recreation Committee for Providence Township and we are working on promoting the Enola Low Grade Trail which was a railroad at one time.  I also enjoy making floral arrangements when I have the time.

What are some of your favorite bands?

I like a variety of music, mostly classic rock, rock and some hip-hop.  Some of my favorite bands are
The Beatles, Tom Petty, CCR, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Blink 182, Chevelle, Snoop Dogg, Incubus.
I could go on and on.

What TV shows do you like to watch?

I don't watch a lot of TV but when I have the time I like to watch Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, The Dog
Whisperer and I just started watching season 1 of
Desperate Housewives on Hulu.

Name something you would love to do one day.

I have never been to the west coast so I would love to go to the west coast for several months to do some hiking.

If you could go back and give the teen age version of yourself advice, what would you tell her?

Take every opportunity given to you.

I'll be doing the Tailwaggers Trot again October 9.
If anyone would like to make a donation, please see me or talk to Shawn at the front desk.

What is your typical work day like?
There is nothing typical about my work day!
Generally, if there is an event, I come in and set-up or make sure we are ready to go for the particular needs of the event. Then it’s all about running the event… talking with the client and tending to any last minute changes, checking A/V equipment, making sure the service staff is ready and understands everything about the event, checking in with the kitchen and reviewing the timeline of what is supposed to happen and when, touch base with bar staff,
expedite the food, talk to the client (again) to make sure he/she is happy, connect with service and bar staff about any issues, expedite dessert & coffee, talk to the client one last time about the event, then clean-up and possibly set-up for the next event. On top of all of that, I have office responsibilities: answering emails and phone calls about booking banquets, inputting information for function sheets, draft room diagrams so maintenance staff can set-up for the next event, have planning meetings/tastings, and give tours of the banquet facilities to possible
future events.

How long have you worked here?
Just over three and a half years.

What were some of your previous jobs?
Server, bartender, caterer, and catering manager.

What did you want to be with you were growing up?
An artist. I actually have a diploma from the (then named) Pennsylvania School of Art & Design, which is what brought me to Lancaster. My focus was illustration. But there wasn’t any local demand for illustrators, and I needed to make fast money once I graduated, so I started serving in restaurants. Because the money was descent, I stayed with it.

Where is your favorite place and where would you like to go on vacation?
I enjoy going to the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts to go whale watching. My mother recently moved to Boca Raton, FL and I had the chance to visit and it was very nice. My dream is to go to China someday… or Japan... or just about any Asian country. I would love to be Anthony
Bourdain for a year and experience many different countries, cultures and food!

What are your interests and hobbies?
Art (as I mentioned before), but I don’t seem to have the time for it anymore. I like watching movies, Travel and History Channels. I’m trying to read more. I like golf, but I’m horrible at it. I also have an interest in model railroading (which I get from my father and uncle).

Do you follow any sports—or have any favorite teams?
Okay, here we go… I’m a huge Notre Dame fan! Which is not a good thing when you live in the “Nittany Lion State”. I like watching tennis… congratulations to Novak Djokovic for his first Wimbledon win! And again… golf.

NOTRE DAME IN ACTION!

What are some of your favorite bands?
Hmmm… I’m all over the place when it comes to music (thankfully, there’s Pandora). I’ll listen to just about anything from Dolly Parton to Beyonce. I like, “Great Standards” to Motown to movie soundtracks.

What are your favorite books?
The Harry Potter books, Dune, The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, and I’m currently reading some of Anthony Bourdain’s books

What are your favorite TV shows?
I really liked the re-make of Battlestar Galactica (I’m a big sci-fi dork, so also include all the Star Trek series), Modern Family, Community, Dexter, True Blood (just to name a few). I really liked Game of Thrones which just finished its first season.

What are some of your favorite movies?
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Harry Potter, “Comic Book” movies, Star Wars, the Kung Fu Panda movies, the Airplane! movies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Avatar. I recently saw the third Transformers movie in IMAX 3D... it was visual comprehension overload, I needed a nap afterward.

Name something you would love to do one day.
Travel, travel, travel

What is the best gift that you've ever been given?
I don’t think I have a “best” gift. I have several that I really liked: a Notre Dame Fighting Irish driver head cover, a Titleist 60-degree wedge, a Star Wars Pop-Up book (don’t laugh… it’s pretty sweet).

What is the best compliment someone could give you?
“Wow! Are you losing weight?” (ha ha… the answer is usually, “No”). It also feels good when you are recognized for a job “well done”

If you could go back and give the teen age version of yourself advice, what would you tell him?
Save your money and travel. See the world! I think everyone should travel outside of the U.S. and get a different perspective on how the world works. Meet and relate to people of all races and cultures… and then come back and share the experiences with your family and friends.

What is your typical work day like?
When I come in I set up the bars, get ice, get the liquor out. We clean up, get the room ready, put the menus out, put crackers on the table. We have to make sure we're stocked, because lunch in the summertime is crazy. Then we do everything in the 19th Hole. We bus, we take orders and serve, make drinks, and at the end of the night we clean up and put everything away, so we can pull it out the next morning and start again.

How long have you worked here?
Just over a year, now.

What were your previous jobs?
I started out babysitting, I think most girls do, and then I became a pharmacy technician. That's someone who helps the pharmacist. We counted pills, took calls, input information in the computer and waited on people.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A vet, a teacher, a pharmacist, medicine really interested me.

Where is your favorite place and where would you like to go in the future?
I went on a Royal Caribbean cruise to the Caribbean and it was awesome, it's so tropical, it was gorgeous.

What is the best concert you've ever been to?
Disturbed, of course. I was in the second row, it was amazing! I started going to shows when I was 7 and I've been to more than I can count. My first concert was KISS!

What books do you like?
Mostly fiction, I like the Chelsea Handler books, the Harry Potter series, the Twilight series. I also really like ‘Fallen Angels’ by Walter Dean Myers.

What TV shows do you like to watch?
‘Criminal Minds’ - hands down my favorite. ‘How I Met Your Mother’. I love ‘Will and Grace’ and ‘Frasier’.

What are some of your favorite movies?
‘The Dark Knight’. I had that on my iPod and I used to watch it every day when I would commute back and forth to Philly, I think I can recite the whole movie. ‘10 Things I Hate About You’, ‘Ratatouille’, ‘Monsters, Inc.’, ‘Because I Said So’ with Mandy Moore, the Underworld series. ‘American History X’.

Name something you would love to do one day.
I'd like to go skydiving, because I hate heights, just to get over that fear (laughs). But I probably won't, I'm such a scaredy cat. I’d like to get married, have kids and be successful.

What is the best compliment someone could give you?
I'm giving, or ‘you're my favorite person’.

If you could go back and give the teen age version of yourself advice, what would you tell her?
Be more adventurous, and be more spontaneous.

What do you do at the club?
I work in the Flynn Grille, the bar and help out with banquets when needed.

How did you come to work at the club?
My daughter went to first grade, and before that I was a stay at home mom, for 6 years. The first day of school when the big yellow monster came and scooped her away, I went to Turkey Hill and bought a newspaper and looked in the want ads. There was an ad for the club and since LCC was the only golf course I had never played in Lancaster County I wanted to apply here. As a kid I grew up at Media Heights Country Club, and I've been playing golf since I was 8 years old. I thought - hmmm – I know how to serve because I did banquets when I was a teenager out at the Host Resort. I came in and filled out an application and said from the get go that I could start in the fall, but come the last day of the school year, I need to leave and take the summer off because we have a place down at the beach.

How long do you stay at the beach?
I leave the last day of school and my daughter and I stay down there until the day before the first day of school. My husband, Randy, comes down on the weekends. We live in Fenwick Island, Delaware at the Treasure Beach RV Park. The camp ground there is like every camp ground I grew up at as a kid.

Do you work down there during the summer?
Yes, I work at tanning.

What previous jobs have you had?
I was a purchasing agent for an investment casting foundry for 4 years, and prior to that, I was part owner of Lemoyne Sleeper for 12 years.
What is your favorite food?
Classic Asian food. Not Americanized Asian food. A good place to go is Lanviet, which used to be Lanvina and is in Bridgeport. It's actually Vietnamese and they are one of the few places in Lancaster that still has authentic dishes.

Where is your favorite place?
Number one has to be the beach. Number two is Florence, Italy.

Where is a place that you would like to visit?
The Grand Canyon, I've never been there I'd like to go to the west coast, someplace past the Mississippi River.

What are your favorite TV shows?
Monty Python's Flying Circus, Saturday Night Live, American Idol, Survivor, and Days Of Our Lives.

What are your favorite movies?
Young Frankenstein, Caddyshack, any Pixar flick, Hoodwinked, anything black and white. I like Cary Grant movies, Some Like It Hot, I love watching Turner Classic Movies.

What is your favorite music?
I grew up with jazz - but alternative jazz. I like early Steely Dan, Rush, Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago, old standards. I'm not a big top 40 fan, I like classic rock - classic vinyl rock.

What are your favorite books?
Anything by James Patterson and Stephen King.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
An architect, I loved to use CAD to design when I was in school, and I loved to draw.

Have dinner with Anthony Bourdain, actually breakfast, lunch and dinner. I think he's awesome.

What is the best gift you’ve ever received?
My daughter Maddy.

What is the best compliment someone could give you?
“You’re always yourself”. Someone once actually told me that "I was genuine and had moxy."

If you could go back and give the teenage version of yourself advice – what would you tell her?
Respect yourself, and respect your elders.

What is a typical work day for you?

During the season we run tournaments for the members, sell items in the shop, teach lessons.
It's usually a full 8 hour shift working either an early, middle or late shift, but some days we're here from
sun-up to sundown.

How did you get interested in golf?

I grew up playing a little bit with friends, but when I got into high school all of my friends were on the golf team and I didn't have anything else going on, so I started playing. And then it just took off from there. I wasn't very good at golf in high school until my senior year when I got serious and started playing more. Before that, I just did it for fun since I had nothing else to do.

What previous jobs have you had?

I worked at Weis Markets in Willow Street. I worked at Cross Gates golf course, and Media Heights in college doing internships, and during college I ran a club repair shop, and worked at a couple of other courses as a part time job.

What is your favorite food?

Macaroni and cheese - the good kind. Not the Kraft version.

What is your favorite place?

Park City, Utah for snowboarding.

Where would you like to visit?

Scotland or Ireland, to play golf.

Do you have other hobbies or interests?

I hunt and fish, and snowboard in the winter. I do a little mountain biking from time to time and I also play hockey.

What are some TV shows that you enjoy?

Pawn Stars, hunting and fishing shows, Penguins and Steelers games - I try to watch every one I can.

What kind of music do you like?

I listen to Country music a lot.

When you were growing up what did you want to be?

An airline pilot.

What is something that you'd love to do one day?

I'd like to go heliskiing. It's where a helicopter drops you off on the top of a mountain and you ski your way down. That would top my list.

What is the best gift that you've ever received?

Probably my first shot gun.

What famous person would you like to meet for
dinner?

Dan Bylsma, coach of the Pittsburg Penguins. He seems like a really smart guy and an interesting personality.

If you could go back and talk to the teenage version of yourself what would you tell him?

Don't be too excited to get out of school because the real world is tough! (Laughs).
Try harder in school and enjoy it more.
